The fishing
on Devils Lake continues to be very good. This past
week we caught most of our fish either pulling spinners with
bottom bouncers along weedlines or trolling crankbaits.
The summer weather seems to want to hang in there enough days
to make you think fall has not yet started and I think the
fish are a little confused by it. The one common demonator
whether we are fishing deep or shallow the walleyes are definately
more aggressive and seem to be fattening up considerably.
They are eating everything in sight to bulk up for winter.
Again we want to
remind everyone that has a trip scheduled with us this fall
to please bring warm clothes. Even though we have 70
to 80 degree highs in the forecast the air is very chilly
in the morning and most days it takes until 1:00 or 2:00 o'clock
before the day warms up to its full potential. The past
couple of weeks very few of our guest have brought warm enough
clothes. Some of the guides do bring extra jackets with
them and we have been pretty much demanding that they wear
them and guess what? The extra jackets that we brought
for them have yet to be taken off!!!
Well with October
less than ten days away, we want to remind all you hunters
coming to Woodland in October, Mitchell's Guide Service is
again offering the "Hunter's Special" fishing package.
This is a great addition to your time spent hunting here in
the Lake Region. Nothing better than to top off a successful
hunt with an afternoon of fishing on the premier walleye lake
in the country. These trips have been very successful
in the past and by the looks of schedule, many of you have
already reserved you afternoon fishing trips. We would
love to have you! Good luck and be safe out there.

Careful what
you wish for!!! Last week we experienced flat calm conditions
and we talked about how that made for tougher fishing.
Well the wind started blowing last Sunday and it hasn't quit
blowing. The only problem is the winds have been so
fierce that we have been extremely limited all week as to
where we could fish. Now for the good news...The fishing
has been spectacular!!! Through all the winds, through
all the changing wind directions, and through all the major
cold fronts, we have not only caught limits of walleyes but
limits of nice walleyes. Yes folks the walleyes are
starting to emerge into their fall patterns. Some of
the same spots that were very good the last couple of falls
have come alive with 17 to 20 inch walleyes.
We have still
been doing a lot of bottom bouncing and we are starting to
have more success trolling number 5 Salmo Hornets and jointed
shad raps. With all the winds we have not been able
to go from spot to spot but rather had to stick it out in
the one spot the wind allows us to fish. Thank God the
walleyes have been cooperative.
We just want
everyone that is on our upcoming schedule this fall to PLEASE
BRING WARM CLOTHES! We want you to be comfortable out
there and it is fall which means change of seasons.
The fall fishing promises to be incredible and we do not want
to see your trip ruined because someone isn't dressed properly.
The rest of
the September looks very busy and October is starting to fill
in quite nicely as well. If you are planning a fall
fishing trip you will not find much better walleye fishing
that Mitchell's Guide Service will help you experience on
Devils Lake the next six weeks. If you are planning
to come to Devils Lake on a hunting trip remember Mitchell's
Guide Service offers 1/2 day fishing adventures in the afternoons
after your hunt.
Have a Great Week
Everybody!

This past week
we have had considerably tougher fishing. Not to make
excuses but the weather has been extremely windy (gusts to
45) or extremely calm. In the walleye world extreme
calm is our worst enemy. Not only does it make for a
tougher bite but the larger fish seem to get lock jaw and
the schools of fish seem to scatter. A walleye chop
always seems to be a catalyst for producing good fishing.
Not only does it ignite the food chain on a shoreline but
it gives fish a reason to congregate in a spot making them
more aggressive and easier for us to locate.
So what does
all this mean? It means our fishing this past week was
a lot tougher. Most of our guests still left with their
limits of fish but they had to settle for fish that ran in
that 14 to 15 inch range without many kicker fish that are
over 17 inches. It is amazing how a couple of 17 to
20 inch walleyes will make a catch look so much more impressive.
There is nothing wrong with keeping some 14 to 15 inch walleyes,
infact they are the best tasting fish in all of Devils Lake
and you will not leave with a limit unless you keep some of
them even when the fishing is at its best.
We are still catching
most of our fish along weed beds trolling bottom bouncers
with spinners and crawlers. We have also tried trolling
crank baits on lead chore but have not had a lot of success
yet. Most of these fish that we did catch were on the
small side. We did catch some larger northern pike though.
Plenty of good
fishing ahead of us, we just need the winds to pick up enough
to give us some walleye chop.
Have a great
week of fishing and we hope to see you on the water!

Another banner
week of fishing!!! Once again the walleyes we have been
catching this past week have been consistently larger and
we have also caught some very nice sized northern pike.
We have still having our best success working weed edges trolling
bottom bouncers with spinners and night crawlers. We
continue to find new spots that produce fish. Not all
of them have the nice fish, some are full of small ones and
an occasional larger one. Mornings have produced larger
fish and the afternoons they become more scattered but at
the end of the day it all adds up to beautiful limits of fish
and a ton of smaller fish that were released. We have
also caught some trophy fish that our clients have been very
good about taking a photo and releasing. So hats off
to you folks!
September begins
tomorrow and before we say good bye to August we should let
everyone know that it was a great month and nearly all of
our August clients left with their limits and with a smile
on their face! See you folks next year! We do
have a very busy September. Now that school has started
just about every where, we want to encourage you that the
summer is not over. We will catch just as many fish
and as September progresses it has been known to be a trophy
time of the year. We have already noticed the last couple
of weeks the consistency of our walleyes are in that 17 yo
21 inch range and we have yet to begin trolling crank baits
or jigging. So there is a ton of prime fishing left
and we would love it if you planned a trip to Devils Lake
to fish with Mitchell's Guide Service.
Hope to see you
on the water!

This past week
things have been very busy for us and the walleyes we have
been catching have been consistently nicer size fish.
Most of these walleyes have been in the 17 to 22 inch range.
Obviously we have found some new spots to fish and the difference
has been not having to go through so many small walleyes to
catch our limits. We are still catching a lot of nice
northern pike along with these walleyes as well.
We are still enjoying our best success trolling bottom bouncers
with spinners and night crawlers working wind swept weed lines
on many areas on the main lake and east bay.
We took a peak
at the upcoming schedule for the rest of August and September.
We have a very busy schedule coming up and obviously people
are remembering all the good quality fish that were caught
during the last couple of falls. We do still have lots
of room and as always we will do our best to find you a date
to come and fish Devils Lake with Mitchell's Guide Service.
See you on
the Water!

Not a whole
lot new to report. We are still catching most of our
fish bottom bouncing with spinners, crawlers, and powerbait.
We are still catching most of our fish in 9 to 16 feet of
water and we are still sorting through a lot of fish to catch
our keepers. We have found some new spots along weed
walls that have been producing a nice mixture of walleyes
and the occasional northern pike. The key to fishing
these weed walls is to always fish the windswept side of the
lake. In other words we always want some sort of wave
action coming in to the weed line we are fishing.
We had a little
slower week this past week as far as customers go and some
our guides did take some well deserved couple of days off.
We have a fairly busy schedule coming up this next week and
we want to remind everyone that even though school is starting
and harvest is under way, the fish on Devils Lake don't quit
biting. The past three years late August and September
have provided some of the best fishing of the season.
The fish generally run larger and the number of fishermen
on the lake is normally way down so once we find some of the
larger fish, we generally are able to enjoy some of these
spots all to ourselves.
Lots of good
fishing left...get them kids off to school this next week
and plan a well deserved fishing trip with Mitchell's Guide
Service!!! We would love to have you!
See you on
the Water.

Mitchell's Guide
Service team of guides is still catching the majority of walleyes
bottom bouncing with spinners tipped with either night crawlers
or Berkley Gulp. We are find fish in quite a few different
depth ranges but 9 to 16 feet of water has been the best.
We are still sorting through a lot of smaller walleyes to
catch a keeper but we are still bringing in nice limits of
walleyes in the 14 to 22 inch range. We have also caught
some nice northern pike mixed with these walleyes and some
dandy perch as well. No big numbers of perch but when
we are catching the odd jumbo perch here and there and doing
so on a daily basis it is generally a good sign that our perch
numbers will be plentiful for the following winter.
MItchell's Guide
Service has been enjoying a very busy summer so far and Devils
Lake seems to continue to provide for some of the best walleye
and northern pike fishing on the continent. It has been
a challenging summer relearning the lake again as the water
levels continue to be the highest in recorded history.
It is a credit to the team work that is executed every day
by our guide staff. It is so fun to hit the water with
such an experienced crew of fishing guides and cast of characters
as well. The fun we are having is contagious and it
is so nice to see our clientele having the time of their lives
catching fish. It is just amazing how far some of our
guests travel to fish Devils Lake with us. Not only
do we recognize this but we are very honored to have a job
that we can accommodate such wonderful guests on a daily basis.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!
Lots of summer left
however and Lots of good fishing left too so if you haven't
done so already get your group together pick a date and give
us a call. We would love to take your party fishing.
PS.
This upcoming weekend (August 13 - 15th) the weather looks
beautiful and we are wide open to take you fishing!!!
See you on
the Water!

Another great
week of Fishing! Not a whole lot new to report as far
as methods go. We are still catching most of our fish
bottom bouncing with spinners and crawlers along wind swept
weed lines. We are catching all kinds of fish and it
can be frustrating at times because we are catching so many
smaller walleyes in the 10 to 13 inch range. It is great
to see the number of walleyes in the system. Our reproduction
the past few years must be absolutely incredible! We
are still catching our limits of larger walleyes from 14 to
22 inchers but we have to work for them and some times sort
through a lot of fish. No lack of action on Devils
Lake!!!
I peaked at
the upcoming schedule this morning and August is looking very
busy! We do have quite a few opening between August
11 to August 16th. If you have those dates open and
are looking for a world class adventure give us a call we
would love to have you. The month of August is one of
the prime months to fish on Devils Lake. Usually the
water temperatures are at there highest and it forces the
fish to go a little deeper. This makes it a great month
for trolling crank baits and bottom bouncing as well.
It is not too late to get that last fishing trip in before
the new school year starts and the nice thing about coming
to fish Devils Lake is the fishing is still spectacular.
Saturday, July
24 2011
The bottom
bouncin spinner season is in full swing on Devils Lake.
We are catching most of our fish in 9 to 13 feet of water
along the weed lines on wind swept shorelines. We are
still catching fish of all sizes but when you use bottom bouncers
it is easy to tell when you need the net! We are also
catching quite a few nice northern pike mixed in as well.
If you have never trolled with bottom bouncers and spinners
this is the time to come. It is such a great way to
fish because we are constantly covering water and hunting
for them. It is so cool to feel the bite and the
fish really don't care if you are a first timer or a veteran
angler. Definitely fun for all ages too.
Most of our fish
are coming on night crawlers but we did have one day that
leeches worked a little better.
The trolling
crank bait bite is also working. Number 5 Salmo Hornets
and number 5 jointed Rapalas have been the best. Best
advice we can give you is too use steel leaders because there
are some big northerns mixed in with the walleyes. Again
we have had success trolling cranks on wind swept shorelines
in 9 to 13 feet of water.
We do still have
some guides that are having success pitching crank baits and
plastics in the shallow water and some of our guides are still
catching fish slip bobbering the weed lines. So there
is something for everyone with all these methods and presentations
that are working.
Hopefully the
we are past the super hot humidity season! Those
were some hot days on the water this past week but it wasn't
as bad you would think. We were lucky enough to have
some wind with the hot temps and it is always about ten degrees
cooler when you are on the water.
It is not too late
to enjoy some of the best fishing Devils Lake has to offer
and all of our methods are still working. We are very
busy but we always seem to find room to accommodate your party.
We would love to have you and now is the time!
Saturday, July
16 2011
The fishing
on Devils Lake this past week has still been very good.
The bait vendors are happy because everywhere we seem to go
we have to weed through a ton of fish to get our keepers.
We are still bringing in limits of nice walleyes anywhere
from 14 to 23 inches but it does take some effort and many
days it does take the full eight hours to get the limit of
keepers. This is typical this time of year - mid summer
patterns where the smaller walleyes of the lake seem to be
everywhere and in most cases are very aggressive in pursuing
a good meal.
The methods we are
using to catch fish are many. We have some guides still
pitching crank baits, we have some of our guides slip bobbering
weed lines and flooded timber, we have some guides that are
bottom bouncing weed lines with spinners and night crawlers,
and we have some guides that are trolling crank baits along
shorelines in 10 to 12 feet of water. All of us are
trying to find a pattern that we can get away from the smaller
fish but I don't think any of us are finding any spots that
have just the big walleyes exclusively. One thing about
it, there is no lack of action anyway.
The month of
July is cruising by and before we know it August will soon
be here. The month of August we spend a lot of time
trolling. We are either pulling spinners with bottom
bouncers or trolling Salmo Hornets and jointed Rapalas.
The fishing is still red hot on Devils Lake in August.
This is what makes Devils Lake so special is that there really
isn't any time period you need to avoid. The fish keep
biting and we just need to make sure we have plenty of people
in our boats ready to catch them!
Have a great
week and we hope to see you on the water!
Friday, July
7 2011
We hope everyone
had a safe and Happy 4th of July! The fishing on Devils
Lake this past week has been decent. The newest revolation
for us has been the number of small walleyes that seem to
be every where. Nice to see that the reproduction has
been so spectacular but they sure do make a guy go through
the leeches! The tricky part is deciding whether to
stay in a spot that is so infested or to move on to another
spot. The answer is there are many cases where you should
move on but there are just as many cases where all the sudden
the nicer fish move in. So, do your best to follow your
hunches.
We have still
been spending most of our time slip bobbering along weedlines
and pitching crank baits and plastics. The back
bays on the main lake have still been kicking out good numbers
of fish but the main lake shore lines have also heated up.
The trick part about working the main lake shore lines is
to figure out the weedlines. In many cases the new shore
lines are too weedy but the old shore line from last year
is the one that is a lot easier to fish. There are still
plenty of spots that are wooded with scattered rock that you
can keep your boat in 6 to 8 feet of water and a cast the
old shore line. It looks goofy because it seems like
you are fishing quite a ways from the new shore. Pay
attention to your GPS.
The July schedule
is filling in nicely and it appears we will have another busy
month. We do still have plenty of room on certain days
and there is plenty of good fishing ahead of us. The
weather in July is usually more stable than the month of June
provides and the reality is the fishing is just as good.
So gather your family, friends, co-workers, and come on up
and fish with us. We would love to have you!
Hope to see you
on the water.

Fishing has
been a little tougher for us this past week. Why?
A number of reasons and it is probably the combination of
all of them. It was a tough week for inconsistent weather
patterns, we have had some thunderstorms blow through the
area with lightening, thunder, high winds, followed by some
pretty major cold fronts. The water in a lot of spots
is way too clear. The water temperature is still a little
on the cool side in the mid 60's and we have not had much
for an algae bloom yet. The last reason which is probably
the biggest one is the lake is up two and a half feet!
This gives these fish another 30 to 40 thousand acres to hide
in. The fish are definitely scattered and we have to
work a little harder than normal for them. But overall
the quality of the fish is excellent and we are still able
to catch limits on most days despite all things that have
gone on here in this past week.
We are still
fishing most of the back bays paying most attention to wind
swept shorelines. We are still having success pitching
crank baits and plastics and slip bobbering as well.
Some of our guides have had some success trolling crank baits
as well. So a little bit of everything going on as far
as our methods and presentations and it is more important
than ever to be mobile and cover lots of shorelines.
The weeds are growing every day too and some of the walleyes
are starting to show signs of getting into their summer patterns
so the bottom bouncing season probably is right around the
corner.
With the month of
June coming to end, we want to remind everyone that Mitchell's
Guide Service has plenty of available room in the first two
weeks of July. July is one of our prime months of fishing
on Devils Lake and usually the weather is much more stable
than in May and June. So, give us a call and plan your
trip today with Mitchell's Guide Service...We would love to
have you!
Have a Great week
and we hope to see you on the water.

We were blessed
with another week of fantastic fishing! We are still
catching both walleyes and northerns in shallow water.
Most effective methods are still slip bobbering along tree
lines and weed lines and casting crank baits and plastics.
The quality of the fish is outstanding! Most of the
walleyes have been in the 17 to 22 inch range and the northerns
have been ranging from the little dinkers we throw back to
the 5 and 6 pounders that are the perfect eating size.
White bass fishing has been very good as well.
Add it all up and it is amazing the number of fish that enter
your boat by the end of the day.
The spring of 2011
so far has shaped up to be one of our best shallow water bites
Mitchell's Guide Service has ever experienced.
We have had some awesome spring fishing over the years but
nothing quite compares to the consistency that we have been
enjoying despite some of the volital weather patterns we have
been faced with. If you have never been to Devils Lake
before or if you are reading this report thinking I should
be there right now...The good news is this tremendous fishing
is no where near coming to an end. The good fishing
of June will continue as long as the weather is decent, July
will be tremendous, Awesome August will arrive and September
and even October will all be prime times to come and experience
open water fishing Devils Lake style. The only thing
that will change is the methods we use to catch these fish.
The Mitchell's Guide Service Team of Guides prides itself
on team work. Every guide on our staff is committed
to making sure everyone has a successful day on the water.
This is the biggest compliment that we hear all the time is
the amount of team work that is involved and executed by our
staff.
Have a great week
of Fishing and we hope to see you on the water!

The fishing this
past week for Mitchell's Guide Service has been nothing short
of spectacular! The quality of walleyes and northern
pike is absolutely incredible and the numbers of fish that
we have been catching in a days time is pretty impressive
as well. For the most part, we have been doing very
well both casting crank baits, mimic minnows, and jigs with
trigger X and slip bobbering with leeches. The majority
of our fish are coming shallow in seven feet or less.
With the cooler than normal spring the time to be here is
NOW! Our water temperatures are mostly in the sixty
degree range and the shallow waters some days are up to sixty
three or sixty four degrees. On the cooler mornings
the fishing really improves in the afternoons.
It is nice
to see so many customers from all over the country that come
and fish with us leaving with their possession limits and
smiles on their faces. This is partly what makes
guiding fishing such a rewarding career. All of the
flooding that we have experienced and the road construction
that we have to deal with is soon forgotten once that last
fish that limits you out hits that live well.
Things are very
busy these days and it is challenging to find room for more
groups at times but the summer has just begun. July
the fishing will be just as good and so will August and September.
Our methods will change as the fish head for deeper water
but the quality will still be there and the numbers of fish
caught will probably even get better.
Have a great week
of fishing!
Saturday, June

We have had
an interesting week. The beginning of the week we had
big winds and thunderstorms infact so big that Monday and
Tuesday we had to cancel all of our trips. Wednesday
was flat calm most of the day and made for some pretty tough
fishing. Anytime you go from two days of 30 to 50 mile
an hour winds to flat calm it tends to throw off the bite.
The last couple of days things have improved dramatically.
Once the weather straightened around the fishing did too.
Limits of walleyes and all the pike you want to keep were
caught both Friday and today. Mix in some white bass
action and its enough to make for some sore arms by the end
of the day.
We are still catching
most of our fish shallow. We are pitching crankbaits
and mimic minnows along wind swept shorelines and we are also
doing a lot of slip bobbering with leeches. We are anchoring
our boats in about 8 feet of water and casting our bobbers
in anywhere from 3 to 8 feet. It is really surprising
how the action goes. You catch a walleye and keep your
eyes peeled because there is a good chance there is another
bobber missing while you are digging the first one out of
the net. Then the action slows, sometimes down to a
crawl. Then boom! Another bobber down. Next
up, the northern pike are here. Catch 2,3,or 4 of those
in a row. Then its slow again. This is the way
it goes. The bites are in fluries. Just about
when you are ready to make a move the next pod of fish move
in. Add it all up by the end of the day, you have your
limit of fish and you have probably thrown back at least as
many.
Well June is
here and our schedule is pretty jammed packed for a while.
We do still have some opening here and there and we will do
our best to find room for you and your party. We anticipate
this shallow water bite to continue for quite a while and
we wouldn't want you to miss out on some of best fishing that
is going on right here right now! (Cross your fingers
for decent weather)

The shallow
water bite is on!!! This past week has produced some
absolutely incredible fishing despite a major cold front.
Things have been a little on the slow side in the mornings
so we have been picking up our guests a little later in the
morning and fishing later in the day when the temperatures
warmed up. We have been limiting out on both walleyes
and northern pike. The walleyes are running anywhere
from 15 to 23 inches and the northerns have been the good
eater size of 4 to 6 pounds and there have been a few up to
10 pounds caught as well.
It is all about
the warmer water. Most of the main lake is around 48
to 50 degrees but in the back bays the water is considerably
warmer with some places reaching up to 58 degrees. We
have been pitching mimmic minnows and jigs with trigger X.
Both of these have been red hot as of late. We
have also been doing quite a bit of slip bobbering along cattails
and shorelines. One tip we can give you is cast the
shorelines until you either catch some fish or start seeing
some follows. Then throw out the anchor and break out
the slip bobber rods with leaches and get ready!!!
Mitchell's Guide
Service is in full swing right now and it feels good!
We have one incredible line up of fishing guides again this
year and it is nice to see everyone back in full swing.
The rising waters of Devils Lake has again changed things
around here and it is so nice to have such an experienced
guide staff to help figure it all out.
Now is the
perfect time to plan your summer vacation and although our
schedule is filling fast we still have plenty of prime dates
available. Remember the only bad time to fish Devils
Lake is the time that you're not here! It is going to
be an awesome summer!
Good Luck Fishing
Everybody!

GAME ON!!!
Jason
Mitchell and his father-in-law went fishing from 3:00 to 7:00
this afternoon and absolutely clobbered the walleyes! They
caught their limit of fish casting mimic minnows and slip
bobbering the shallows along a wind swept shoreline. They
released 3 or 4 larger walleyes and kept their limit of 18
to 20 inchers. Not bad for 4 hours of fishing during the
middle of the afternoon. Way to go Jason and Curt!

This past week we
have had some pretty brutal cold temps for May. It has
been raining some but for the most part it has been very cloudy
and temps in the 40s. We have not done a lot of fishing
due to these conditions but we are hearing some decent reports
from anglers that were out last weekend when the weather was
nicer. Those that enjoyed some success were casting
mimic minnows jigs tipped with minnows working the shallow
water shorelines and flooded road beds. The coulee
fishing has slowed up considerably as most of those fishing
have been spawning. The shallow fish on the main lake
are still hungry and have not yet spawned out.
We have had a lot
of phone calls this past week wondering when is the best time
to come and fish Devils Lake? The answer
to that question really depends on how you like to fish.
Most of May and June our fish are pretty shallow 1 to 5 feet
of water. So we pitch a lot of crank baits and work the shorelines.
As the water warms up the fish move deeper and our methods
change. The months of July and August, we spend a lot of
time trolling spinners with bottom bouncers along weed beds
and flooded roads. We also do some trolling crank baits
in 10 to 25 feet of water as well. We have a flooded timber
bite that lasts the entire summer so we do a lot of slip bobbering
with leeches which also is a lot of fun. September and October
can be a smorgasbord of many methods as some fish go back
into the shallow waters again. We do a lot of jigging over
the side of the boat, trolling, and casting crank baits as
well. This is what makes Devils Lake such a great destination.
There are so many different methods that we use to
catch fish through out the season and there just isn't any
slow periods to avoid during the open water season.
Whether you choose the first week in June, the middle of July,
the end of October or any dates in between, the fishing on
Devils Lake will be a trip of a lifetime.
The good
news for the week is the boat ramp situation is improving.
They have been working hard this past week and noticeable
progress has been made on the ramp here at Woodland Resort,
Six mile Bay, and Lakewood. They have also been
busy working on the new ramp up in Pelican Lake and south
of Minnewaukan on Round Lake. By Memorial Day things
should be back to normal as far as boat ramps go.
From
May 20th on Mitchell's Guide Service will be in full swing.
Our schedule is really starting to fill fast so if you are
planning a late May or June trip, I would recommend giving
us a call as soon as you and your party can do so. We
wouldn't want you to miss out on this shallow water bite.
Good
Luck Fishing Everybody!
Sunday,
May 1 2011
Greetings everybody
and welcome to what hopefully will be another fantastic year
of open water fishing on Devils Lake. As of this morning
we are happy to report that all the ice is off of Devils Lake.
The high winds we have had the past 24 hours took care of
most of it. We have had a bit of a strange spring around
here...actually we have not had much spring at all.
Just when we thought winter was over she would give us another
2, 4 to 6 inches of snow again.
Because of all the
snow last winter, Devils Lake is again on the rise.
This is not good news as the next 2 to 3 feet of water is
very devastating to our local area farmers, neighboring cities
like Minnewauken, Churches Ferry, and Penn, Resort owners,
and lake home owners. These are the folks that
are most affected by our additional 2 to 3 feet of water that
is on its way. This will also have a profound effect
on the fishermen that are planning to fish Devils Lake this
summer. The number of flooded roads in our area, the
number of highways that are going to be under construction
all summer, the number of boat ramps that are no longer usable,
and the number of bridges that we will no longer be able to
get our boats under will have all of us scratching our heads
a little more as we try and plan a day of fishing. Graham
Island which in the past handled 50 to 60 percent of the areas
boat landings in a given summer is currently open on a day
by day basis. These are just some of the effects that
the flood of 2011 will have on us. Officials will be
raising boat ramps and preparing them for the new water levels
and they will do their best to have them operational by Memorial
Day weekend.
Devils Lake
is still one of the top walleye fisheries on the planet and
although we will be more challenged finding ways to get to
them for the reasons mentioned above, the abundance of walleyes
and northern pike that swim in these waters will still be
as hungry as ever. This new water will again give
us new waters to explore infact 30,000 to 45,000 acres of
additional water. If you ever thought about hiring a
guide to fish Devils Lake before we cannot think of a more
opportune year than this one to give Mitchell's Guide Service
a try. We are by far the busiest, largest, longest running,
and most respected open water guide service on Devils Lake.
We have seen more change on Devils Lake than anyone and this
year will be no different.
On the bright side,
the fishing so far from shore has produced one of the strongest
early seasons we have ever seen on Devils Lake. There
have been numerous limits of both northern pike and walleye
caught pitching jigs with twister tails. Find the current
areas and success
will soon follow. Please remember that catch and release
on some of these larger fish is an investment in our future.
We have been
very busy taking reservations and our first clients will be
showing up around the 15th of May but we are by no means full.
There are plenty of prime dates available in May and June.
We do want to encourage you to book as early as you
can because lodging in the Devils Lake area will be slim pickins
from all the contractors in town raising our roads and dikes.
Gas Surcharge
has been added to our rates and packages:
Because of the escalating
gas prices we have added a $35.00 per day gas surcharge per
boat. Our gas prices are already $1.20 higher than last
season. We do not want to increase our rates and if
gas prices go back down we will gladly remove this charge
but until that happens we have no choice but to add this surcharge.
