Devils Lake Fishing Report for the week of May 14th to May 19th, 2018
By Pete Harsh
Happy Days Are Here Again! Mitchell’s guide service has officially kicked off the 2018 Open Water guiding season! After a long winter it is great to be on the water again! Already our guides have guided old customers and new customers to good catches of walleyes and northern pike as these photos of fish caught show. May can be a month of temperature and weather fluctuations and this week was no exception. Devil’s Lake and the surronding area received some much needed rain.
Temperatures last week climbed to a high in the 80s and lows at night dropped into the 30s. Our weather has run the gamut as it often does in the month of May. Water temperatures have risen to the mid-50s and in some cases pushing 60 degrees. Our walleye spawn is over and the fish are starting to become more active. Some very nice fish were caught this last week with good activity on the weekend in spite of a quickly passing cold front. Northern pike and walleye are running shallow and presentations vary from slip bobbers to pitching jigs and casting crankbaits. The shallows are warming and that is where you will find the most active walleye and pike. With the cooler night temperatures, the shallows quickly cool down and the afternoon has proven to be the best bite. Our guides have found the fishing at times challenging and once again it is weather related. Stable weather brings very good quality limits of walleye and even some limits of good pike. Two northern in the 18 to 20 pound range were caught by our clients this last week and a number of very good walleyes were reported caught also. No matter how you look at it, this is just a great time of the year to be on the water once again!
